On first arrival at the squadron you will most likely find that the squadron is very different if you haven't been in a military organisation before.
On your first night, we will introduce you to the squadron. You will have an informal talk with the Officer Commanding, about the activites and opportunities that are available to you in the Air Training Corps, and also to find out where your strengths and interests lie.
After this short talk you will be given an opportunity to get involved in the training programme for that evening. This could involve either projects -- anything from fieldcraft to radios, or from first aid to hovercraft building -- or starting the academic training syllabus. These include Map Reading, Airmanship and the History of the RAF as well as other practical subjects.
There are 7 different subjects to study initially, each culminating in a short multiple choice question paper.
There are also a whole range of other activities, such as flying, gliding and camping, which are on offer to all members of the squadron.
So...all these activites sound amazing. However, we do require a few things from you as well. We ask from you that you attend at least 7 our of the 8 parade nights a month, and also regularly weekend activities. This is so we can get the most out of you and is for YOUR BENEFIT. Secondly, we expect a high level of maturity and discipline - this is again for the BENEFIT OF YOU.
The Air Training Corps is one of the top military youth organisations in the country - so if you are 13 or over then come down to Bawtry Squadron, and see what you can achieve!
